Seven Ways to Avoid Stress

Stress is a common part of life, but there are many strategies you can employ to help avoid or reduce it. Here are seven effective ways to manage and mitigate stress:

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Engage in mindfulness and meditation techniques to stay present and reduce anxiety. Regular meditation can help you build resilience against stress by promoting relaxation and improving emotional regulation. Set aside 10-15 minutes daily for meditation. You can use a guided meditation app or simply sit in a quiet space, maintaining your focus on your breath and letting go of any distractions. Take a few minutes each day to engage in a simple mindfulness exercise. Find a quiet space, sit or lie down comfortably, and close your eyes. Focus on your breath as it goes in and out. Pay attention to the sensations of your breath, the rise and fall of your chest or abdomen, and let go of any racing thoughts. Do this for 5-10 minutes to centre yourself.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural stress relievers. Make exercise a regular part of your routine, whether it's through jogging, walking, yoga, swimming, or for example, Pilates is a low-impact exercise that focuses on core strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. It can help reduce physical tension and promote relaxation. Go for what ever you enjoy as long as you make it a daily routine.

Maintain a Balanced Diet: Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide your body with the nutrients it needs to cope with stress. Avoid excessive caffeine, sugar, and processed foods, as they can exacerbate stress. Simple Balanced Healthy 2-Course Meal: Main Course: Grilled chicken breast with a side of quinoa and steamed broccoli. Season the chicken with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper and lemon juice. For the quinoa, cook it with vegetable broth and add chopped herbs. Steam the broccoli until tender. Dessert: A bowl of mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) with a dollop of Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey.

Set Boundaries: Learn to say "no" when necessary and establish healthy boundaries in both your personal and professional life. Overcommitting can lead to increased stress levels. Saying 'No' without feeling guilty: When declining a request, it's important to be polite but firm. You can say something like, "I appreciate your offer/invitation, but I currently have other commitments that I need to prioritize. I hope you understand." Remember, it's okay to prioritize your well-being and not overcommit.

Seek Support and Social Connections: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a therapist when you're feeling stressed. Sharing your concerns and seeking support can provide valuable perspective and emotional relief.
